Dearest Mom,

Somehow wishing you a Happy Mothers Day doesn’t quite cut it this year.

In lieu of being with you this Sunday, I hope you will enjoy the piece I made for you, using Granny’s beautiful poem written for her mother.

Creating it made me feel very connected to the both of you, like I was part of an embracing circle.

I hope you like the art work, I haven’t framed it for fear of breaking glass and damage. It is the product of my first meager attempts at recapturing my illustration skills, long neglected, and of course I don’t have nearly enough colour in my collection of supplies.

I’d especially like to draw your attention to the third stanza;

“All my years were filled with you,
Your calm dignity and Grace.
All your Wisdom, filled my life
Through your voice and smiling face.”

It captures the sentiment you were telling me about a couple days ago, how no one knows you as deeply as your mother, how she was the one constant in your life, your whole life.
“All my years were filled with you.”

But I also wanted to draw your attention to the fact your name, albeit incognito, appears here. Wisdom and Grace. I doubt Gran selected these words for any reason other than they were appropriate to the poem.

However, it smacks of soul speak to me indicating how the love of Mother remains with her Daughter and is in turn enriched and transferred to the next Daughter and so on and so on. Like passing on the torch, Granny’s love for her mother, is encoded in your very name. In your very being.

Granny’s Love is eternal, despite the fact she wasn’t. Try to remember, when you can’t feel her touch, or even hear her voice, she is riding with you, heartbeat to heartbeat, stop, breathe listen to your heart, feel it beat, feel your Mothers love cascade through and around you. She is there, for as long as you are here.

I love you.

  1. My mother called me when she received this package.

    She told me she wishes every woman could read those words. About how a mothers love never dies, so for your wish Mom, and to all mothers and daughter's, especially those who have lost a mother through death, or absence,for all sons, and those who never knew, this ones for you.
    Happy belated (or early) Mother's day.
