Judas Is No Traitor in Long-Lost Gospel - Los Angeles Times:
Long Lost gospel of Judas to be published
How surprised was I to find out the long lost gospel of Judas, was discovered in 1970. 19-frikken-70! What's been the hold up? It was written in Coptic, a common ancient biblical language that has never been "lost". In other words, translation was not a factor in preventing the earlier release of this document into public domain. Perhaps restoration techniques and other authenticating techniques may have taken some time, but thirtyfive years?
Whatever.
What most excites me is that for the first time, I have found evidence that what I have always beleived as true, may actually be more fact than fiction (or imagination) afterall! I have never been able to embrace Judas as a traitor. The story of 20 shekles of silver being the reason he betrayed Jesus didn't wash with me. Never did.
I have always had a suspicion that Judas of Iscariot was only doing what his beloved teacher asked of him. The main reason I felt this was because time and time again it was pointed out in the gospels that Jesus KNEW what was coming to him, and yet he went willingly to his sacrifice. He even rode in to Jerusulem on an Ass, just as the prophecies of old promised. And as the prophesies promised it was into the hands of his enemy that he rode. Unless Jesus was stupid, or had a deathwish why would he willingly go to his death?
Well, assuming he was neither stupid or harbouring a deathwish he knew what he was doing, and had a plan. I remember reading Jesus said he came not to bring peace, but to fulfill the law, or otherwords the prophesies. Because of this, I have always felt that Judas was only helping Jesus with his task, and at Jesus's own request.
Mark my words in times to come Judas, will be as popular a name as Peter or Maria is now.
